"From pavements to Pluto: explaining the forces that have shaped ours and other planets"

Triggered by an attempt some years ago to explain the emergence of fields of curious blisters in the pavement outside my office on Gower Street, I was encouraged to explore the possibility that similar mechanics might be driving the formation of closely related features in the permafrost within the Arctic Circle - albeit at orders of magnitude increased spatial scales. The recent photos from the New Horizon’s probe as it zipped past planet Pluto, on its way into outer space, show features very similar to some of those encountered in the Arctic and also those observed on some of the outer planets and their satellites.

Having never been really comfortable with the theories of continental drift and more recently plate tectonics, partly as a result of observations while mountain climbing in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, I have recently joined the band of geologists challenging the current paradigm for geology. It will be suggested that the dynamic evolution of the Earth’s crust has closer affinities to the growth of blisters on Gower Street than it does to the boiling of a bowl of porridge.

Date: Friday 8 July 2016, admission 6:15 pm for 7 pm start.

Venue: Penthouse, New Zealand House, 80 Haymarket, London SW1Y 4TQ
