On Friday 10 October we held an auction of New Zealand art to
raise funds for The New Zealand Shore Plover Appeal. The donated art, from New Zealand
artists or art that has a New Zealand theme, raised enough for us to
be able to donate over $20,000 to DoC for the New Zealand Shore
Plover; the money raised will help continue the 5 year
reintroduction programme on Mana Island and upgrade the captive
breeding aviaries at Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.
Along with the generosity of the
artists listed below, we are extremely grateful for the
support of
Crown
Fine Arts in assisting with transporting art from
New Zealand and Suze in
Mayfair for exhibiting the art. Dinner sponsors at the event included
Fonterra, Barfoots of Botley and Sealord.
Elspeth Alix Batt
After
working mainly as an illustrator and designer of children's books,
School Journals, cards, flags and postage stamps, Elspeth has recently
moved more into the Fine Art field, painting both abstract and realistic
works which allow her to express her great love of the New Zealand
landscape and people, and by implication, the need for “us all to
appreciate and safeguard them”. Elspeth works mainly with transparent
acrylic and watercolour but also uses pencil and pen and ink, and loves
to experiment with computer printouts, metallic inks and gold leaf.
This year Elspeth has won the inaugural NZAG Art Awards, 3rd prize in
the Open category at the Royal Easter Show Art Awards, the Raye Hannam
Memorial Trophy for the Best Watercolour in the Royal Easter Show Art
Awards and 4th prize in the recent Peters Doig Art Awards in Blenheim.

Sally is
an Auckland-based self-taught artist and facilitator, who enjoys
creating a diverse range of works. She has won a number of awards,
exhibited widely and her works are in collections in New Zealand,
London, Australia, USA and beyond. She also receives regular invitations
and requests to contribute her artworks to various high profile
charitable auctions, both in NZ and overseas, and is always happy to
support the cause.
Inspired by countries and their cultures, Sally loves sourcing new ideas
and materials, and devising innovative ways of interpreting and using
them. Her aim is to evoke a sense of actually being in a particular
place and time, rather than recreate an image which can be captured on
camera. A symbol, a colour, a word, an impression, a mood ... if the
viewer can recall the feeling of being in that place; gain the desire to
be there; experience that moment in time again ... then the art has done
its work.
Sally works from her home-based studio overlooking the garden, and
regularly exhibits at group exhibitions around Auckland and beyond. She
is constantly experimenting with new styles and techniques, and always
on the lookout for fresh ideas and inspiration.

Tony offers us all a vision of perseverance and triumph
over turmoil. An enthusiasm to forge a better life is what fuels Tony’s
passion to create works that inspire powerful and emotive responses: “I
want to reach out to people who are stuck”.
Tony’s paintings, which are deeply inlaid with a locality and
familiarity and in some cases, are intimately provocative, grapple with
issues such as depression, loneliness, adoption and sobriety. Tony’s
dark and raw works show an artist who interprets issues with an innate
sense of compassion and individuality. Through a process of
rehabilitation, Tony rediscovered art as a form of expression from
childhood and values the emotions he is able to stir within viewers of
his work.
Tony has a Bachelor of Visual Arts, is a member of the NZ Art Guild, has
been a finalist in national art awards and recently judged an emerging
art award. Commissions accepted.

A New
Zealander on the move, with an insatiable appetite for everything that
is Kiwi. Born and raised in New Zealand, Jono came over to Europe in
the late 70s and became the proverbial kiwi ski bum, living and working
in the ski town of Chamonix in the French Alps. Now all grown up,
married, and with an energetic wee boy in my life, he did his stint in
the UK for 20 years working in the ski industry for specialist ski and
outdoor retailer Snow and Rock.
Jono has now returned to the mountains and settled near Annecy in the
French Alps. Specialising in lifestyle and adventure sports
photography, it’s the perfect base - and the skiing is pretty good
too!!! Jono tries
to do a trip ‘home’ to NZ most years always with camera in hand. With
a passion for landscape photography too ,he travels round the country
with my family in tow capturing the magical scenery and light that is
only New Zealand .
A native
of New Zealand, Jonathan Clark’s passion for photography and his
award-winning web design has allowed him to live on three continents and
visit thirty countries over the last nine years.
Recent projects include an appointment as photo-documenter of the lives
of the First Nations People of British Columbia for the Canadian
Government; and photographing the legendary counter-culture art
festival, Burning Man, in the U.S. Nevada desert for Lonely Planet
Publications.
A graduate of New Zealand’s Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland,
Jonathan’s university training in the fine arts specialized in Visual
Communication. His awards in New Media Design inspired him to go out and
sketch the world as a way to try and make sense of it. After rapidly
experiencing many cultures and people, he realized his pencil was too
slow a medium and it was replaced with a camera.
Jonathan considers himself in "constant evolution as a photographer and
a human being" and dedicates much of his energy into training in area's
that widen his world view. Although inspired by many artists and people,
he credits his strongest mentors as National Geographic photographer,
Steve McCurry, and Visionary Artist and spiritual teacher, Uriel Dana,
both of international acclaim. Clark has trained with McCurry in the
U.S. and Asia, and had years of training in Vajrayana Buddhism with Dana
in the U.S., Canada, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.

Alan started painting late in life, having
been inspired by his aunt, Grace Joël, a renowned artist in her native
country, New Zealand. She painted in the UK at the turn of the 19th
century, exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Painting, and winning the
Silver Medal at the Paris Salon 1923.
Unlike Grace, Alan was not fortunate enough to be trained by Renoir!
However he has had the benefit of one to one tuition with two of
England's top painters. Both encouraged Alan's natural flair &
dash, apparent in his work which illustrates both spontaneity and the
individual use of bold colour.
A Member of the United Art Society of London, Alan works from his studio
based in Wiltshire.
Alan has this to say about his donated piece: "The painting was inspired
by my only mountaineering experience when some 60 years ago I crossed
the NZ alps via the Copeland pass. The guide pushed us on as the
weather can change so quickly and I had time for a quick 5 minute sketch
and a photo and only in recent time have I had time to do the painting."
Mary Jane studied art
at my school in Wellington, New Zealand, followed by oil painting
technique in Madrid, Spain and a course of silk screen printing at the
Chelsea College of Art, London, England. Mary Jane has lived and
travelled in many countries which have influenced her art. Colour and
design are important to her and her paintings have sometimes been
described as whimsical, Dufy-ish or in the style of Matisse. Exhibits
have included Juried Group Shows, Hampstead Open Air Show, London, Rona
Gallery, St Katherine Dock, London and
Artists' League of Central New Jersey Statewide Art Show, USA.
Chavah is a self-taught Artist who works in acrylic
paints and mixed media on canvas. Born in Western Samoa in 1984, raised
in Auckland and now living in Southland, life for Chavah has always been
diverse and colourful, just the way she likes it.
She tends to simplify the forms of her subjects, zooming in on specific
areas creating a focal point and exploring them. She is inspired by her
heritage, emotions, motherhood, beliefs and reflections on life. These
ideas are translated onto canvas through texture; symbolism and poetry
to create an array of work that can connect personally with each
individual. Her paintings are creative and colourful as she chooses
colours, subjects and styles that reflect her mood on the day.
You will find Art by CTTK displayed in homes, hospitals and offices
throughout New Zealand. Her paintings can be found in exhibits
nationwide such as the Royal Easter Show in Auckland, The Affordable Art
Show in Wellington and the Woman’s Art Exhibition in Gisborne. Chavah is
a member of the NZ Art Guild.

Born and raised in rural Southland, Tania observed first
hand the rich diversity of New Zealand’s beautiful flora and fauna. She
grew up captivated by the unique wildlife and rugged landscape that is
the essence of New Zealand.
Tania is a professional artist who paints both NZ
landscapes and birds and wildlife as well as the world’s exotic
animals. “I love it when a painting evokes an emotional response in the
viewer and feel privileged to earn a living doing something I have such
passion for”. Member of the
NZ Art Guild.
With a focus on New Zealand’s native botanical and bird
imagery, Rae reflects in her paintings both a personal appreciation and
ongoing concern for her surrounding environment.
Colours are earthy and warm with splashes of reds and
blues. She embellishes this palette with the use of gold leaf, creating
an element of luxury and preciousness about her work. West is a full
time artist, living in Kaiapoi; She exhibits widely throughout New
Zealand and has sold many pieces overseas.
Elisabeth lives & works in Central Otago
New Zealand. Her work covers landscape, figures and themes based on the
landforms and the effect the history of settlement has had on the land.
The main overiding influence however is the beauty and dominance of the
landscape at Bannockburn amongst which she feels privileged to live.
Her work is mostly mixed media-ink, acrylic and whatever comes to hand.
Elisabeth has exhibited in Arrowtown, Cromwell, Greymouth and
Christchurch over the past six years. She lives in a vibrant art
community based around a Collective Art Gallery, Hullabaloo at Old
Cromwell Town Historic Precinct.
Our kind thanks to Martin Conway, cousin of
Elisabeth and our immediate past president, for donating "Clay Cliffs"
and also paying for the framing for both pictures.
Graham Young has built a reputation for creating
paintings that capture the vibrancy of contemporary New Zealand life
through sparkling light and bold colour. And while the beautiful New
Zealand landscape is often the backdrop for his works, Graham also
focuses how people live in their country – the human touch is always
evident in his works.
These paintings have made their way into collections internationally,
with the appeal of his work transcending national boundaries. He enjoys
travelling and has a keen interest in art history, but New Zealand, his
adopted home, remains his primary inspiration – not just as a visual
motif, but the relaxed kiwi attitude to life.
