The initial aims of the Society were to celebrate what it meant to be a New Zealander in England, and to promote trade between the two countries. The New Zealand Society of today seeks to provide unique opportunities for Kiwis, as well as those who have an interest in New Zealand, and to network and meet socially.

Highlights of the evening include the presentation of the 2016 UK New Zealander of the Year Award, as well as a sparkling evening of New Zealand wine and food, and our famous Charity Raffle and Silent Auction with prizes donated by New Zealand owned or operated businesses. All net proceeds from the Silent Auction and confidence our Charity Raffle go to the New Zealand Society’s Charitable Fund. 2015 saw 260 guests enjoy a spectacular event celebrating New Zealand in England, with £15,000 raised for the Charitable Fund.

17 – 21.11.2015 – The Royal NZ Ballet presents ‘A Passing Cloud’ at the Royal Opera House + a chance to win tickets for the Wednesday 18th November performance

Royal New Zealand Ballet has won an international reputation for their exciting, experimental repertory – a reputation borne out in this new mixed programme at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre that celebrates New Zealand and Pasifika culture.

Anatomy of a Passing Cloud - RNZ Ballet Nov15

The programme includes new works from New Zealand choreographers Andrew Simmons and Neil Ieremia. In his fourth work for the company, Simmons creates work to music by New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. Ieremia also sets work to music by a New Zealander, turning to Warrant Officer Dwayne Bloomfield’s epic tone poem Passchendaele, first performed on Anzac Day in 2009. Ieremia’s ballet of the same name pays homage to New Zealand’s military role in World War I.

London-based Venezuelan choreographer Javier De Frutos created The Anatomy of a Passing Cloud for Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2013, to mark the company’s 60th anniversary. De Frutos intended the work as a ‘gift to New Zealand’, and explores Pasifika imagery and culture through dance and music. Completing the programme is Greek dancer and choreographer Andonis Foniadakis’s Selon désir (According to desire), created for Geneva Ballet in 2004. This work uses mass movement to explore the contrast between heavenly inspiration and earthy energy, and is set to the opening choruses from Bach’s St Matthew Passion and St John Passion.

A Passing Cloud can be seen in the Linbury Studio Theatre 17-21 November for £8-£25
